Which is better? Single Guitar FX pedals or Multi-Effect Units?
This is a question that gets asked a lot among guitar players looking to get the best tone from their hard-earned dollars. Largely the answer comes down to personal preference, however there are a couple of points to concern when comparing differences between single FX guitar pedals products and Guitar Multi-Effect units. Recently, there has been a flood of low priced multi-effects to hit the market, many guitar players have been eager to jump from individual guitar effect pedals to multi-effect pedals. Multi-effect pedals do have a wider range of effects for the price and can be a great value for money especially when you consider some of the features built-in to them like on-board recording, drum machine, guitar tuner, etc.. However, many single guitar pedals do offer higher quality and often a wider range of effect. Why? Well, in order to pack all the effects into the circuitry of a multi-effects processor, designers have to make compromises to squeeze everything into one unit. So you might have more effects but each effect is restricted in it's range. Whereas typically the single effect unit has dedicated circuitry focuses on one effect and can fully exploit the effects range. So it's something to consider when comparing single and multi-effects pedals especially if your are looking for a specific effect or just need a jack-of-all trades type of unit.
